Service Tax Registration is a tax registration required for businesses providing services in India. Service tax registration is an indirect tax wherein the service provider pays the tax and recovers the same from the recipient of the taxable service. Service Tax registration is mandatory for every person or business in India that has provided a taxable service of value exceeding Rs. 9 lakhs, in the previous financial year. However, the exemption of charging the service tax is for first time till the revenue from the taxable service exceeds Rs. 10 lakhs.
At present, Service Tax is levied at 15% on the value of the taxable service. This includes Krishi Kalyan Cess @ 0.50% on the service amount, and Swach Bharat Cess Cess @ 0.50% on the service amount. Failure to obtain service tax registration would attract penalty in terms of section 77 of the Finance Act, 1994.
After obtaining the Service Tax Number the person or business mandatorily files the Service Tax Return with the CBEC. Service Tax Return must be file half yearly. Service Tax Return for the period April-September must be file by the October 25 and for the period October-March must be file by April 25.
